Board and Batten Spacing Formulas

  1. 1Available clear width = wall width − (batten count × actual batten width).
  2. 2With battens at both edges, number of spaces = batten count − 1.
  3. 3With equal gaps at both edges, number of spaces = batten count + 1.
  4. 4Clear gap = available clear width ÷ number of spaces.
  5. 5Center-to-center spacing = clear gap + actual batten width.
  6. 6When a maximum gap is entered, the calculator rounds the required batten count up so the calculated clear gap does not exceed the entered maximum.
  7. 7Total vertical batten length = batten count × wall height.
  8. 8Stock pieces per batten = wall height ÷ stock length, rounded up; order quantity adds the selected waste allowance and rounds up again.

Imperial and Metric Board and Batten Examples

Imperial example: a 12 ft wall is 144 in wide. Eight battens at 2.5 in each cover 20 in. With battens at both edges, the remaining 124 in is divided across 7 spaces for a 17.71 in clear gap and 20.21 in center-to-center spacing. On an 8 ft-high wall using 8 ft stock, eight base pieces become nine pieces with 10% waste. Metric example: a 3.6 m wall is 3,600 mm wide. Eight 65 mm battens cover 520 mm. The remaining 3,080 mm divided across 7 spaces gives a 440 mm clear gap and 505 mm center-to-center spacing.

Accuracy & Assumptions

  • Wall width is measured between the finished boundaries of one uninterrupted layout section.
  • Batten width is the actual installed face width and is consistent across the wall.
  • Every clear gap is intended to be equal within the selected wall section.
  • The chosen edge layout accurately represents how the first and last battens should meet the wall boundaries.
  • Wall height and stock length use the same measurement system and reflect the intended vertical run.
  • Joining shorter stock pieces is permitted; otherwise stock at least as long as the wall height will be used.
  • Waste is applied once to whole stock pieces and represents spare or unusable material rather than additional layout battens.
  • Final marks will be field-checked from a consistent reference edge before installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate board and batten spacing?

Subtract the total width of all battens from the wall width, then divide the remaining width by the number of clear spaces. The number of spaces depends on whether battens or gaps are placed at the wall edges.

Should board and batten spacing be measured edge to edge or center to center?

Clear spacing is measured between batten edges. Center-to-center spacing equals the clear gap plus one actual batten width. The calculator reports both.

How many battens do I need for a wall?

Enter your desired maximum clear gap and the calculator will round up to a batten count that keeps every equal gap at or below that value.

Should I put battens at both ends of the wall?

Either approach can work visually. Choose edge battens when the first and last battens meet the boundaries, or equal side gaps when you want matching open margins at both ends.

Do I use nominal or actual batten width?

Use the actual installed face width. Nominal lumber dimensions and actual finished widths can differ enough to change every calculated gap.

How do I lay out battens around a window or door?

Treat the areas on either side of the opening as separate wall sections unless the design intentionally continues one shared pattern across the opening.

Can I use the calculator for board and batten siding?

Does this estimate horizontal rails or top boards?

No. The material result covers vertical battens only. Measure horizontal rails, ledges, caps and base trim separately.

How much waste should I add?

Five to 10 percent may suit a simple verified layout, while complex cuts, defects and uncertain measurements may justify more. The layout count itself does not change; waste adds spare stock pieces.

Can I estimate board and batten cost?

Yes. Enter the price per stock batten and an optional allowance for other materials. Labor, tax, delivery and unlisted materials remain excluded.

Can I use Metric measurements?

Yes. Metric mode uses m for wall and stock lengths and mm for batten width, clear gaps and centerline positions.

Is this spacing structurally approved?

No. The result is a visual layout estimate. Confirm backing, fastening, wall construction, exterior-envelope details and applicable requirements separately.
