Roof Drip Edge Quantity Formulas

  1. 1Base drip-edge length = eave length + rake length + other included edge length, or the entered known total.
  2. 2Waste length = base drip-edge length × waste percentage.
  3. 3Waste-adjusted length = base drip-edge length × (1 + waste percentage ÷ 100).
  4. 4Effective added length per stock piece = stock-piece length − required piece overlap.
  5. 5Calculated stock pieces = (waste-adjusted length − one overlap) ÷ effective added length per piece, rounded up to a whole piece.
  6. 6Pieces to buy = the greater of calculated pieces or the entered number of separate edge runs.

Imperial and Metric Roof Drip Edge Examples

Imperial example: 100 ft of eaves plus 60 ft of rakes equals 160 ft of base length. Ten percent waste produces 176 ft. With 10 ft stock pieces and a 2 in overlap, each additional piece contributes about 9.83 ft. The combined estimate rounds up to 18 pieces, subject to a roof-edge cut layout. At an entered price of $14 per piece, estimated drip-edge cost is $252. Metric example: 30 m of eaves plus 18 m of rakes equals 48 m. Ten percent waste produces 52.8 m. With 3 m stock pieces and a 5 cm overlap, the combined estimate rounds up to 18 pieces. Product dimensions, laps, layout and prices are examples only.

How do I calculate how much roof drip edge I need?

Add the measured eave, rake and other included edge lengths, add waste, account for the required overlap between stock pieces, divide by effective piece length and round up. Then verify the result with a cut layout.

Is drip edge measured in linear feet?

Yes. Imperial projects commonly use linear ft and Metric projects use linear m. Measure along the actual roof edge where the approved project requires drip edge.

Do I include both eaves and rakes?

Include only edges within the confirmed project scope. Requirements and installation details can differ between eaves and rakes, so measure them separately even when both are included.

What stock length should I enter?

Enter the purchasable length printed for the exact drip-edge product. Ten-foot pieces are common in some Imperial markets and 3 m pieces in some Metric markets, but suppliers and products vary.

How much should drip-edge pieces overlap?

Use the lap required by the selected manufacturer, approved roof details and locally adopted requirements. The calculator loads a planning example but does not select the installation lap.

How much waste should I add?

A simple verified roof may need a modest allowance, while many corners, short runs, transitions or difficult cuts can require more. A piece-by-piece layout is more reliable than any general percentage.

Why does the calculator ask for separate edge runs?

Every independent edge run needs at least one starting piece, and an offcut from one run may not fit another. The input helps prevent the estimate from dropping below that basic minimum.

Does the piece count account for every joint?

It includes a combined overlap allowance, but it cannot place joints across separate eaves and rakes. Confirm the result with a cut layout showing the length of every roof-edge section.

How are drip-edge fasteners estimated?

If you enter a confirmed spacing, the calculator divides base installed length by that spacing, rounds up and adds one starting fastener per separate run. This is not an installation schedule.

Does drip edge go over or under the underlayment?

Sequencing can differ by roof edge, roof system, adopted requirements and manufacturer instructions. Follow the approved details for the specific eave and rake rather than relying on the quantity calculator.

Can I use the calculator for different drip-edge profiles?

Yes for quantity planning when stock length and overlap are entered correctly. The calculator does not determine whether an L-, D-, T-, F- or other profile is suitable.

Does the estimate include corners and special flashing?

No. The result covers straight stock pieces and optional piece cost. Fabricated corners, kick-outs, transitions, special flashing, sealants, fasteners and labor require separate planning.

Can I use Metric measurements?

Yes. Metric mode uses m for roof-edge and stock lengths and cm for overlaps and optional fastener spacing. Enter native product dimensions available in the project market.
