Imperial and Metric Ice-Barrier Examples

Imperial example: 100 ft of eave with a confirmed 3 ft membrane depth requires 300 sq ft before waste. With 10% waste, the adjusted area is 330 sq ft. At 195 sq ft of effective coverage per roll, 330 ÷ 195 = 1.69, so buy 2 rolls. Metric example: 30 m of eave with a confirmed 0.9 m membrane depth requires 27 m². With 10% waste, the adjusted area is 29.7 m². At 18 m² of effective coverage per roll, 29.7 ÷ 18 = 1.65, so buy 2 rolls. Required locations, depths and laps must be confirmed separately.

  • Every entered length, width, depth and area is measured on the applicable roof-deck surface in one consistent unit system.
  • The membrane depth at eaves has already been established from approved plans, locally adopted requirements and project geometry.
  • Valley width represents the complete required membrane width, not the distance from the valley centerline to one side.

Not always. Required side and end laps can reduce usable coverage below roll width multiplied by roll length. Use published effective coverage when available.

Does ice and water shield replace roofing underlayment?

Not necessarily. Self-adhered ice barrier and general underlayment can serve different locations and purposes. Follow the complete approved roof-system requirements.

Can I calculate valleys and eaves together?

Yes. Add each measured zone, but avoid double-counting where valley membrane intersects an eave strip or another protected area.

Can I use Metric measurements?
