Imperial and Metric Fiber Cement Siding Examples

Imperial lap-plank example: a 40 ft × 30 ft building with 10 ft walls has 1,400 sq ft of rectangular wall area. Two 30 ft gables rising 6 ft add 180 sq ft. Subtract 220 sq ft of confirmed openings for 1,360 sq ft net, then add 10% waste for 1,496 sq ft. A 12 ft plank installed at 7 in exposure covers 7.00 sq ft. Divide 1,496 by 7 and round up to 214 planks. Metric panel example: 122.2 m² net with 10% waste requires 134.42 m². A 1.2 m × 2.4 m panel covers 2.88 m², so the preliminary quantity is 47 panels. Both examples demonstrate arithmetic only; product sizes, exposure, deductions and waste must be confirmed for the project.

Part of each lap plank is covered by the course above it. Installed exposure is the visible height that contributes to wall coverage.

Should I subtract windows and doors?

Measure openings, but confirm the deduction method for the actual layout. Small openings and usable or unusable offcuts can change whether the full opening area reduces purchasing quantity.
