Stone Veneer Flat, Corner and Mortar Formulas

Imperial and Metric Stone Veneer Examples

Imperial example: a 20 ft × 10 ft wall has 200 sq ft gross area. Subtract a 20 sq ft opening for 180 sq ft net. Ten linear ft of corners at an entered 0.75 sq ft per linear ft replace 7.5 sq ft, leaving 172.5 sq ft of flats. With 10% waste, buy about 189.75 sq ft of flats and 11 linear ft of corners. If the exact approved mortar publishes 20 sq ft per bag, 180 sq ft requires 9 bags before any separate mortar allowance. Metric example: an 18 m² gross wall minus 2 m² of openings has 16 m² net. Three linear m of corners at 0.2286 m² per linear m replace about 0.69 m²; with 10% waste, buy about 16.84 m² of flats and 3.30 linear m of corners. These examples demonstrate the arithmetic only.

How do I calculate how much stone veneer I need?

Calculate gross wall area, subtract confirmed openings, subtract the wall area represented by corner pieces, add project waste to the remaining flat area and order corners by waste-adjusted linear length.

Is stone veneer measured in square feet?

Flat veneer is commonly estimated by square coverage. Outside-corner pieces are often estimated by vertical linear length, with a product-specific conversion for the flat area they replace.

How do I measure stone veneer corners?

Add the vertical height of each outside corner receiving matching corner pieces. Do not use horizontal wall length or count inside corners unless the selected product has a separate applicable detail.

Why does the calculator subtract corner coverage from flats?

Corner pieces wrap onto the adjacent wall faces and cover area that otherwise would use flat stones. Subtracting their represented area helps avoid double-counting.

Does every linear foot of corner replace 0.75 square foot?

No. That is only a common estimating example. Use the conversion or packaging method published by the exact veneer manufacturer or supplier.

How much waste should I add for stone veneer?

Waste depends on the profile, pattern, color and size blending, cuts, corners, breakage and installer method. Ten percent is only a planning example; confirm the allowance with the supplier and installer.

Should I subtract windows and doors?

Does manufactured stone use the same mortar as natural thin stone?

Does stone veneer require structural support?
