Siding and Trim Formulas

Example Calculation

Imperial example: a 40 ft × 30 ft rectangular building with 10 ft walls has 1,400 sq ft of rectangular wall area. Two 30 ft-wide gables rising 6 ft add 180 sq ft. Subtract 220 sq ft of measured openings for 1,360 sq ft net. With 10% waste, plan for 1,496 sq ft, or 14.96 siding squares. If one carton provides 200 sq ft of effective coverage, divide 1,496 by 200 and round up to 8 cartons. Metric example: a 12 m × 9 m building with 3 m walls has 126 m² of rectangular wall area. Two 9 m gables rising 1.8 m add 16.2 m². Subtract 20 m² of openings and add 10% waste for 134.42 m². At 18.5 m² per purchasing unit, round up to 8 units. How many square feet are in a square of siding?

One siding square equals 100 sq ft. A square is an industry area unit and may not equal one carton or package.

How do I calculate a gable for siding?

Should I subtract windows and doors from siding area?

Deduction practices vary with opening size, panel layout, offcut reuse and supplier method. Measure openings, but confirm whether and how much to deduct for the selected product and layout.

Does the calculator estimate corner posts?

Yes in simple-dimensions mode. It rounds wall height up to whole stock pieces for each entered inside and outside corner.

Can I use this for vinyl, fiber-cement, wood or engineered siding?

The area method can support different materials when you enter the exact effective coverage and purchasing unit. Trim, waste, fastening and installation rules remain product-specific.

Does the estimate include house wrap and flashing?

No. Weather-resistive barriers, flashing, drainage accessories, fasteners, mounting blocks and specialty trim require separate product-specific takeoffs.

Can I estimate material cost?

Yes. Enter available prices for the siding unit and trim pieces. The result excludes labor, tax, delivery, removal, repairs and unlisted materials.

Can I use Metric measurements?
