How to Measure Exterior Walls for Siding

Sketch each building elevation and divide it into simple rectangles and triangles. Measure wall length and the rectangular wall height for each section. Multiply length by height, then add the rectangular wall areas.

A simple rectangular building with one uniform wall height can use perimeter × wall height. Buildings with additions, stepped walls, porches, bump-outs, mixed heights or dormers should be measured as separate sections rather than forced into one perimeter calculation.

How to Measure Gables and Dormers

For a triangular gable, multiply the base width by the vertical rise from the top of the rectangular wall to the peak, then divide by 2. Measure each gable separately when widths or rises differ.

A 30 ft-wide gable rising 6 ft has 30 × 6 ÷ 2 = 90 sq ft. Two matching gables add 180 sq ft. Do not use sloped rake length as the triangle height; use the vertical rise.

Dormers and complex shapes can often be divided into rectangles and triangles. Keep different siding orientations, products or exposure patterns in separate takeoffs when their coverage and waste differ.

Should Windows and Doors Be Subtracted?

Measure every opening, but confirm how the selected product, supplier or installer handles deductions. Large doors and grouped windows may materially reduce siding area. Small openings can create enough surrounding cuts and unusable offcuts that deducting their full area understates purchasing quantity.

A conservative method may deduct only larger openings and allow smaller openings to contribute to the waste buffer. A detailed panel layout is more reliable than one universal deduction rule. Never subtract the same opening twice or deduct an area that will still receive another siding product.

How to Calculate Siding Material

Gross exterior area = total rectangular wall area + total gable and dormer area.

Net siding area = gross exterior area − confirmed opening deductions.

Waste-adjusted siding area = net siding area × (1 + waste percentage ÷ 100).

Siding purchasing units = waste-adjusted siding area ÷ published effective coverage per purchasing unit, rounded up.

Calculate different siding products separately. Do not combine fiber-cement lap siding, shakes, panels, board-and-batten or accent areas unless they use the same purchasing unit and coverage.

Siding Squares Are Not the Same as Cartons

One siding square equals 100 sq ft. Divide waste-adjusted siding area by 100 to express an Imperial project in squares. A result of 14.96 squares represents 1,496 sq ft of planned coverage.

A siding square is an area unit, not a guaranteed package size. Carton, panel, bundle and package coverage varies by manufacturer, profile, exposure and product line. Use the printed effective coverage for the exact purchasing unit instead of assuming one carton equals one square.

How Much Waste Should You Add for Siding?

Waste covers end cuts, gables, rakes, openings, corners, defects, damage, pattern alignment and offcuts that cannot be reused. A simple rectangular building using repeatable cuts may need less extra material than a house with many gables, dormers, short walls and accent transitions.

Five percent can be a starting point for a simple verified layout, 10% is a practical general planning allowance and 15% or more may be appropriate for complex geometry or detailed patterns. These are planning inputs, not manufacturer rules. A panel-by-panel layout and supplier guidance are better for final ordering.

How to Estimate Starter Strip, J-Channel and Corner Posts

Measure trim by its actual installed route. Starter strip typically follows the approved base-course locations. J-channel or another approved receiver may follow openings, rakes and terminations, depending on the selected system. Add each route, apply a trim-specific waste allowance, divide by usable stock length and round up.

Count inside and outside corners separately. For each corner, divide the required wall height by usable corner-post length and round up before multiplying by the corner count. This prevents a short remainder from one corner being assumed reusable at another.

Trim names and methods vary by siding system. Fiber-cement, wood, engineered products, panels and masonry accessories may use different corner, flashing and termination details than vinyl siding. Follow the exact product instructions and approved wall design.

Imperial and Metric Siding Examples

Imperial example: a 40 ft × 30 ft rectangular building with 10 ft walls has 2 × (40 + 30) × 10 = 1,400 sq ft of rectangular wall area. Two 30 ft gables rising 6 ft add 2 × (30 × 6 ÷ 2) = 180 sq ft.

Gross area is 1,580 sq ft. Subtract 220 sq ft of confirmed openings for 1,360 sq ft net. Add 10% waste: 1,360 × 1.10 = 1,496 sq ft, or 14.96 siding squares. At 200 sq ft of effective coverage per carton, 1,496 ÷ 200 = 7.48, rounded up to 8 cartons.

Metric example: a 12 m × 9 m building with 3 m walls has 2 × (12 + 9) × 3 = 126 m² of rectangular wall area. Two 9 m gables rising 1.8 m add 16.2 m². Subtract 20 m² of openings and add 10% waste for 134.42 m². At 18.5 m² per unit, 134.42 ÷ 18.5 = 7.27, rounded up to 8 units.
